How to Fish endangered species: the Tourist & carrot bait quest

The older Steam player walkthrough reports that the Desert Island Tourist exchanges an endangered fish for carrot bait. It names Needlefish, bowl fish and sea horse, using a pink Standard Lure. This is a community route from an outdated guide, not a verified 1.1.x catch table; check your current quest and Fishipedia.

Which endangered fish does the Tourist accept?

The three examples below come from one player's published walkthrough. They are reported candidates, not an exhaustive list or a guaranteed current-version requirement. Read the Tourist's dialogue before you spend time hunting a specific creature, and compare the creature's in-game label with the quest request.

Source nameEvidence
NeedlefishCommunity

Reported as accepted by the Tourist in the older Steam walkthrough.

Bowl fishCommunity

The source's name for one accepted fish; check the label in your game.

Sea horseCommunity

Reported as accepted; spelling follows the source, not our older database.

Which lure should I try, and what should I check first?

The same historical report recommends the pink Standard Lure. Confirm the item name in your version rather than relying only on its color. The source does not establish a spawn percentage or a fixed coordinate, and we have not independently tested this lure on the current patch. Do not treat repeated misses as proof of a broken quest.

  1. Read the Tourist's current request and keep the quest item until the hand-in is resolved.
  2. Check the creature and bait names in Fishipedia where available.
  3. Compare your build with the source version before trusting older lure advice.
  4. If the NPC refuses a fish, record the creature name, quest text and game version before trying another candidate.

Are endangered creatures the same as Drip fish?

The walkthrough distinguishes endangered species from Drip variants and reports that a creature can have both labels. A cosmetic variant alone is not the quest criterion in that account. Use the game's actual label and NPC response; see the Drip fish guide for the separate collection topic.

Why do older site pages mention two Spotted Guppies?

[Attribution Note] Our older Desert database entry claimed “2 Spotted Guppies.” Unconfirmed We cannot substantiate that requirement. The Steam player guide instead describes an endangered fish and lists the three examples above. Both claims are shown here for transparency; the older database wording is not independent confirmation.

The Steam guide is itself marked OUTDATED and describes a 1.0.4 playthrough. Its update date is not proof that all mechanics were re-tested. The later official 1.1.0 update added creatures and new bait, so neither source establishes the full current roster.
