How to Fish Controls and Aim Settings: What You Can Actually Change

How to Fish lets you switch aiming and sprinting to toggle, hold to attack, invert the mouse X/Y axes, rebind reload (Patch 1.1.2) and downgrade a scope back to ironsight (also 1.1.2). No official patch note documents a deadzone slider or a raw-input option, and no sensitivity values are published — so if you are hunting for a specific number, the honest answer is that it is not documented, and the workarounds below sit outside the game.

Which control settings are confirmed by the official patch notes?

Seven options are named in the developer's Steam announcements. Each row below quotes the official wording, because the notes say what was added without describing the menu layout.

SettingAdded inOfficial wordingWhat it does
Toggle Aim1.0.11 (1 Sep 2026)"Added option to use toggle for aiming"Aim without holding the button. The notes do not describe the menu path.
Toggle Sprint1.0.11 (1 Sep 2026)"Added option to use toggle for sprinting"Sprint without holding the button.
Hold to Attack1.0.11 (1 Sep 2026)"Added option to hold to attack"Hold the attack input instead of tapping it.
Teammate nametags on/off1.0.11 (1 Sep 2026)"Added option to toggle nametags"Toggles player names above teammates.
Invert look X / Y1.0.5 (22 Aug 2026)"Added option to invert axis on x and y for looking around"Camera inversion for mouse users. No sensitivity slider is described alongside it.
Reload rebinding1.1.2 (29 Sep 2026)"Added rebinding for reload"The only new rebind listed in the 1.1.x notes.
Downgrade a scope to ironsight1.1.2 (29 Sep 2026)"Added the option to downgrade to ironsight again"1.0.11 had removed the standalone iron sight purchase; 1.1.2 restores the downgrade route.

What are the default keybinds on keyboard, controller and Steam Deck?

The developer has never published a default keybind list — not on the store page, not in any patch note. Any table claiming exact default keys is therefore either a screenshot of one player's remap or an invention. What we can confirm is which actions exist and which of them the notes describe as adjustable:

ActionWhat the notes confirmAdjustable?

Keyboard & mouse

Open the in-game controls screen to read the live mapping. Mouse X/Y inversion is the only camera option named in the notes (1.0.5).

Controller

Steam lists full Xbox and PlayStation controller support. The notes do not publish a controller button map; reload is the one action confirmed as rebindable (1.1.2).

Steam Deck

Steam Deck Verified since 1.0.11. Valve's verified status covers playability and default controller support, not a published Deck-specific layout.

Which settings are undocumented or not exposed?

“Not documented” is not the same as “not in the game”. As of Patch 1.1.3 no official announcement describes the settings below, so we mark what we could not verify instead of presenting the patch notes as a complete options list:

Deadzone slider

Unconfirmed / not documented

No patch note through 1.1.3 mentions a deadzone value. The Steam discussion thread “Please add a deadzone setting” (16 October 2026) is a feature request, not evidence that the option shipped. Workaround: set the deadzone in Steam's controller configuration — Steam applies it before the game reads the stick, so it changes behaviour even when the game exposes nothing.

Mouse sensitivity

Community report

The patch notes only document axis inversion (1.0.5), but a firsthand Steam discussion report describes a camera-sensitivity control in the options menu. We could not verify its range, default or units, so we publish no numbers. Treat “a sensitivity setting exists” as community-reported and any specific value as unverified; check your own options menu before using external workarounds. Workaround if you want a different feel: adjust DPI or the operating system pointer speed and keep a fixed in-game value so the same muscle memory carries between sessions.

Raw input toggle and aim-assist switch

Unconfirmed / not documented

Neither a raw-input option nor an aim-assist toggle is named in any official note. Players asked “Way to disable aim-assist?” in mid-October 2026, and that thread has no developer-confirmed answer we can cite.

A thread titled “mouse camera movement” (19 October 2026) is only a title: it does not say whether the player meant sensitivity, raw input or stutter, so we do not convert it into a bug claim. If you post about it, name the symptom — camera acceleration, uneven aim or frame hitches — and the answer becomes checkable.

What controller problems are players reporting, and is 1.1.x fixing them?

Steam discussion threads posted between 16 and 19 October 2026 describe control and aim problems; the three most specific reports are tabulated below. We track them as community reports: no developer reply or patch note confirms a cause, and no 1.1.x note lists any of these as fixed.

Reported symptomEvidenceFixed in 1.1.x?What to try
Boat throttle stuck fully on after releasing the right triggerSteam discussion, Xbox controller, 16 October 2026Not mentioned in 1.1.2 / 1.1.3Reconnect the controller, restart the session, or use the keyboard for the boat
Aiming with the SMG feels impossible (thread body not verified)Steam thread titled “Can't aim the SMG at all”, 17 October 2026 — we could not verify the body; it may be skill or expectation rather than an input faultNot mentioned in 1.1.2 / 1.1.3No fix is established. Note the exact symptom — missing sight, failed zoom, or recoil — before assuming a bug
No deadzone adjustment for stick driftSteam discussion, “Please add a deadzone setting”, 16 October 2026No such setting in the notesSet the deadzone in Steam's controller configuration

These are player reports collected from the Steam Community discussion hub on 2026-10-16 to 2026-10-19. They are not developer-confirmed defects, and the workarounds are community suggestions rather than tested fixes. We will revise this section when an official note names the fault.

How does bow aiming work in How to Fish?

The bow is confirmed by the official notes — Patch 1.1.2 added two new skins for it — but the developers have never published its draw time, damage, projectile drop or a bow-specific aim mode. That means the honest answer to “how do you aim with the bow” is: the game gives you a bow and a sight picture, and everything past that is practice, not a stat sheet.

  1. Stand on solid ground and shoot a stationary target at short range to see where the projectile lands relative to the crosshair.
  2. Repeat at medium range to judge whether you need to lead the target or aim high. Record what you observe rather than trusting a number from another guide.
  3. Record the drop you observe at short and medium range instead of trusting a number from another guide; the developer publishes none.
  4. If the bow will not aim at all, do not assume it shares a cause with the SMG report — we have no evidence linking the two. Note what you see (no reticle, no zoom, input ignored) and report it to the developer.

These are field-test steps, not developer facts. We deliberately publish no damage or drop figures because the official notes contain none.

Controls & aim FAQ

Frequently asked control and aim questions

Q:Can you turn off aim assist in How to Fish?

We could not find an aim-assist toggle in any official patch note through 1.1.3, so we cannot confirm that a disable option exists. Players asked "Way to disable aim-assist?" in the Steam discussions around 16 October 2026. Check your in-game options first; if there is no aim-assist row, the setting is not exposed rather than hidden behind a menu we have missed.

Q:Does How to Fish have a deadzone setting?

No official patch note through 1.1.3 mentions a deadzone slider, so a deadzone setting is undocumented rather than confirmed to exist. The workaround is outside the game: Steam's own controller configuration lets you set a deadzone per controller and is applied before the game receives input. A request thread titled "Please add a deadzone setting" was open in the Steam discussions in October 2026, which suggests players had not found one in-game.

Q:Can you rebind keys in How to Fish?

The only rebinding change in the official 1.1.x notes is reload: Patch 1.1.2 added "rebinding for reload". No other action is described as newly rebindable, and the developer has not published a default keybind list, so check the in-game controls screen for the current mapping.

Q:Where do I change toggle aim, sprint or hold-to-attack?

Those options were added in Patch 1.0.11 and live in the game's options menu. The patch notes announce the options but not the exact menu path or their default state, so we do not invent a path; look through the gameplay/controls section rather than the graphics section.

Q:Why is my boat throttle stuck on with a controller?

A Steam discussion thread posted around 16 October 2026 reported the boat throttle staying fully on with the right trigger released after using an Xbox controller. No 1.1.x patch note mentions this as fixed. Reported workarounds from that thread are to reconnect the controller, restart the session and, if it persists, switch to keyboard for the boat. These are player reports, not developer-confirmed fixes.

Q:How do you aim with the bow in How to Fish?

The bow is confirmed to exist — Patch 1.1.2 added two new bow skins — but the developers have not published draw time, damage or projectile-drop values, and none of the 1.1.x notes describe a bow-specific aim mode. A "How do you aim with the bow" thread was active in the Steam discussions on 19 October 2026. Practise on a stationary target and note the travel time yourself; we do not publish numbers that were never verified.
